The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has reported the deaths of two inmates in the county jail.
The Sheriff’s Office reported the death of an inmate who had previously engaged in behavior involving self-inflicted injuries and refused to cooperate with medical care. The inmate had been hospitalized a total of 18 times since his arrest. He died around 6 a.m. on Friday, September 15th, and his body was taken to the Coroner’s Office. The inmate had been in the jail since August, 2021 on charges of second degree murder, aggravated assault, fugitive from justice and a hold for immigration officials.

The Sheriff’s Office said a second inmate died after being taken to a hospital after treatment for ongoing medical issues.
The 65-year-old inmate was in the jail’s medical infirmary and he was transferred to a hospital on Monday. His condition continued to worsen and he was pronounced dead shortly before 8 p.m. An autopsy will be conducted.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sheriff’s Investigation Division will look into the inmate’s death. The inmate was being held on a probation violation and misdemeanor charges, and he had been in the jail since August. His name was not released at the request of family members.
This is the fifth in-custody death at the jail for 2023.
