One person has died and another has serious injuries after they were hit by a car in Riley County.

The accident was reported Thursday morning on Kansas Highway 18, east of Scenic Drive, southwest of Manhattan.  Troopers said the two pedestrians had been involved in separate non-injury accidents around 5:30 a.m.  They had stepped out to check their vehicles, when an SUV approached and struck a dead deer that had been hit in one of the previous accidents.  The SUV then went out of control and hit both pedestrians.

The first pedestrian who was hit was identified as 20-year-old Jhon Paulo Reid of Manhattan, and he was pronounced dead.  The other pedestrian, a 24-year-old Manhattan woman, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating.
