Wichita City Council members have voted unanimously to approve the budget and move ahead with bids for construction on a major upgrade for the recreation center at McAdams Park. The center will be known as the Carl G. Brewer Community Center, in honor of the late former mayor of Wichita.
Park and Recreation Director Troy Houtman said the project will provide infrastructure for new technology that will enhance programs offered in the center. He said based on community feedback, the center will provide technology and educational services, more options for health and fitness activities, community programming and a variety of educational classes. City Council Member Brandon Johnson said the project embodies the goals of honoring Mayor Brewer, and he said a culinary function with a kitchen will be the most important in providing an opportunity center.
The council saw designs presented by the Kansas City firm of SRS Architecture. The center is expected to cost $13.7 million to build, and project costs will be initially offset with contributions from a private donor. Construction is expected to begin in early 2024.
