A line of severe thunderstorms moved through central Kansas and made its way into the Wichita area by late afternoon Friday, bringing strong winds and heavy rains.
A wind gust of 75 miles an hour was reported in Phillips County in northern Kansas. As the storms moved into central Kansas, a wind gust of 67 miles an hour was reported near Newton in Harvey County. A wind gust of 60 miles an hour was reported north of Arkansas City as the storms moved into Cowley County.
Winds in the Wichita area were reported to be 55 to 57 miles an hour. There were reports of downed power lines and scattered outages, affecting at least 300 customers. The largest outages were in the Topeka, Kansas City and Lawrence areas as a separate batch of storms moved through northeast Kansas. Over 90,000 customers were without power in that region.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reported downed tree limbs and power lines from the storm.
