Winfield police said a man drowned at the Tunnel Mill Dam early Thursday.

Officers were called out around 12:30 a.m. to check on a man in the Walnut River, and they were told he may be going through a mental health crisis.  Officers found the man in the water yelling for help, and they tried to guide him back to shore but he swam farther away.    The man went under the water before Fire and EMS crews could get to the scene.  Rescue crews found him and got him out of the river.  He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The man was identified as 42-year-old Sonesiri Phengsengkham of Winfield.
