Is it safe to assume most of you are familiar with The Terminator movie franchise. Not only the film that gave us one of the most recognizable movie lines of all time
But also made us aware of how messing with A.I. can go horribly wrong. Well, here we are, 2023, and A.I. is taking off faster than a cheetah on roller skates chasing a taco truck down a hill ….that’s fast. At that speed, developers and regulators are having a tough time keeping up. It’s safe to say this could get away from us if we’re not careful. How bad would it be if it does, like if A.I. gets so out of control, we have trouble reining it in. WELL, according to the experts, this is what they had to say on Tuesday –
“Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” This was in a letter signed by many of the industry’s most respected figures on the subject. I mean, we didn’t listen, and in some cases still aren’t listening to the experts when it comes to climate change and we’re chasing our tail on that. I think it’s safe to say, maybe it’s time to put our listening ears on. I decided to take it one step further and I asked Google’s new A.I. “Bard” – Will A.I. lead to human extinction…below is Bard’s answer
____________
It is possible that AI could lead to human extinction, but it is also possible that it could lead to a better future for humanity. The risks of AI are real, but they are not inevitable. If we are careful and deliberate in our development of AI, we can mitigate the risks and ensure that AI is used for good.
Here are some of the risks of AI:
- Existential risk: AI could become so intelligent that it surpasses human intelligence and capabilities. This could lead to an AI that is indifferent to human needs or even hostile to humanity.
- Weaponization: AI could be used to create autonomous weapons systems that could kill without human intervention. This could lead to a new arms race or even to a war that could destroy humanity.
- Mass unemployment: AI could automate many jobs, leading to mass unemployment and social unrest.
- Bias: AI systems could be biased, reflecting the biases of the data they are trained on. This could lead to discrimination and other negative consequences.
Despite these risks, there are also many potential benefits of AI. AI could be used to:
- Solve some of the world’s most pressing problems, such as climate change, poverty, and disease.
- Improve our lives in many ways, such as by providing us with better healthcare, education, and transportation.
- Create new industries and jobs.
- Make us more creative and productive.
The future of AI is uncertain. It is possible that AI will lead to our extinction, but it is also possible that it will lead to a better future for humanity. The choice is ours.
Here are some things we can do to mitigate the risks of AI:
- Develop AI systems that are aligned with human values.
- Ensure that AI systems are transparent and accountable.
- Invest in education and training so that people can adapt to the changing job market.
- Promote international cooperation on AI development and governance.
By taking these steps, we can ensure that AI is used for good and that it does not lead to our extinction.
