The Wichita City Council has approved funding for this year and next year to make some needed improvements and upgrades to the city’s five dog parks.
One facility, the K-9 Rooster Dog Park at Meridian Park, has had heavy use and it is in line for projects to add more shade and prevent the ponding of water in areas of the park.
The Council approved $300,000 in capital project funding this year and another $300,000 in 2024 to make improvements. Improvements at other dog parks will be made as funding allows.
There have been calls for new dog parks in the city, but Council members Maggie Ballard and Bryan Frye and Mayor Brandon Whipple feel that the existing parks need to be taken care of before any new parks are added to the system.
