Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors World War II Veteran Bill Monfort. When Bill came into the world, it was the year the first long distance call was made, the band-aid was invented and a loaf of bread was 8 cents. He grew up on a family farm where they grew a lot of their own food. He grew up just down the street from President Jimmy Carter and knew him when he was 11 years old. Bill served in the Navy as a radio operator, survived the attacks on Pearl Harbor and when he came back home, he and his wife Bessie helped transform care for children with disabilities after their daughter Rossie was born with developmental disabilities. They started the non-profit Angels Unaware, so people like Rossie could live in a home-like setting. Today, Angels Unaware has eight campuses and is the longest running group home in the Tampa Bay area. Recently, Bill celebrated his 106th birthday. Bill says he loves people and values relationships most. He credits his longevity to those close bonds, a healthy diet and a sense of humor. Thank you for sharing your life well lived with us Bill and THANK YOU for your service.
