Senior Services of Wichita said it is experiencing extremely low volunteer numbers.
The organization delivers between 750 to 850 meals each weekday to homebound, isolated seniors through the Meals on Wheels program.
The program has averaged between 10-15 open delivery routes each day for the past few months. When a route doesn’t have a volunteer, then it is up to staff members to make deliveries. At present, the program is down 2 full-time and 6 part time employees.
Officials said that because of the volunteer shortages, they are considering placing a hold on new clients.
