A former boys basketball coach at Wichita’s East High School has died at the age of 71.

Ron Allen coached at East High for 18 years, leading the Blue Aces to state championships in 2002 and 2005. He retired from coaching at East in 2012 and was inducted in the school’s hall of fame.

Allen most recently was an assistant coach at Newman University alongside his son, R.J., serves as head coach. Ron had a 301-146 record in 20 seasons coaching in the City League, including two at West High.

Allen played football and basketball at Southeast and was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame in 2014. He then went on to play basketball at The University of Arizona.

His time as coach also earned him induction into East High’s hall of fame.
