The school board in Independence, Missouri has voted to move to a four-day school week, starting in the 2023-24 school year. The board voted 6-1 Tuesday night to make the change.
The district began talking about a four-day week last summer as a way of recruiting and retaining teachers as a statewide shortage continues for teachers, bus drivers, nutrition workers and other personnel. The district superintendent, Dr. Dale Herl, said applications have gone up more than 300 percent since the board began talking about the concept.
Several other districts in Missouri have gone to a four-day week.
