An inmate at the Winfield Correctional Facility died on Thursday.
31-year-old Juan Manuel Torres died was found unresponsive in his housing unit and staff began life-saving measures and continued after emergency medical services arrived. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy. Initial assessment indicated Torres’s death was not related to COVID-19.
The death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Torres was serving a 63-month sentence for convictions in Ford County that included drug possession, fleeing law enforcement, DUI, and violation of the Kansas Offender Registration Act.
