Evergy says power grid in Kansas is ready for heat wave

Officials with Evergy said there is enough power in the system to meet anticipated demand as temperatures reach triple-digits in Kansas this week.  The utility said Tuesday that there have been no calls for electricity conservation.

In a press release, Evergy Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Chuck Caisley said the system has had relatively few outages this summer and there has not been an increased number of outages.   He said Evergy has invested in updates and maintenance of the electrical grid to ensure its reliability.

The power grid has thousands of mechanical parts that can be affected by extreme weather, wildlife and normal wear-and-tear on the equipment.  Excessive heat can put additional stress on these parts that would cause power outages.   Evergy will often reroute power through other lines to allow crews to get in and make repairs.

Customers are encouraged to have a safety plan in case of a power outage during the extreme heat.
