Wichita City Council members will be appointing a commission of electors next month to begin redrawing the boundaries of the six council districts, according to numbers from the 2020 Census. The commission will look at the possibility of expanding the number of council districts to eight, to conform to population growth in the city.
Mayor Brandon Whipple talked about the plan during his weekly news briefing Thursday. The mayor and each of the six council members will appoint a member to the commission of electors, and there could be more than seven members. They will have to have a recommendation to the City Council by August 31st and the Council will then have to approve new boundaries by December 31st.
Mayor Whipple said public input will be sought during the process, and feedback will be sought on any communities of interest that should be taken into consideration when the new boundaries are drawn. Input can be provided through the city’s Forum web page at forum.wichita.gov
