Governor issues disaster emergency declaration for wildfire danger

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issued a declaration for a State of Disaster Emergency on Sunday for a high fire danger that will exist for much of the week.

A Red Flag Warning was issued for warm temperatures, low humidity and strong winds that placed much of the state at an increased risk for wildland fires.   Kansas residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning.

The declaration allows the use of state resources and personnel to help with response and recovery operations in areas affected by wildfires.   The greatest fire danger has been in western Kansas.   The state’s Emergency Operations Center in Topeka was partially activated Sunday morning to help with any fire response activities that are needed.

Rain and storms are expected Monday in south central Kansas and the rain could mix with snow early Tuesday.  Temperatures will warm up later in the week and the fire danger could be high again next weekend.
