KU School of Medicine-Wichita departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences have partnered with Credit Union of America and Haysville USD 261 to increase availability to mental health services for students within the district.
Their goal is to provide treatments that have scientific support of their effectiveness for children and adolescents with mental illness. The model will include an onsite primary care physician and a child and adolescent psychologist who see patients in the school-based health clinic. This team will work directly with a child and adolescent psychiatrist, regularly receiving expert-level guidance.
“Because it can take months or even years to see an expert in pediatric mental illness, this model will improve access for the students at Haysville schools who struggle with mental health concerns,” said Aaron Ryan, executive director of KU Wichita Medical Practice Association.
Physicians are currently being recruited and this new model should be in place by August. Patients or the patients’ families can inquire about this model by contacting the Haysville School-Based Health Clinic at 316-554-2317.
