The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said a man and woman were arrested late Sunday after a confrontation that led a deputy to fire a shot at them.
An off-duty deputy was called to a theft at a business at Harry and Webb Road. He confronted two people, and one of them drove a vehicle toward the deputy. The deputy then fired a shot into the car, but the two people inside were not hit.
The vehicle sped away but Wichita police officers stopped it a short time later near Oliver and Morris. A 55-year-old woman was booked for aggravated assault and drug charges. a 31-year-old man was arrested and booked on theft and drug charges.
The 34-year-old deputy has been with the Sheriff’s Office for seven years. He was not hurt in the incident. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is working with the professional standards unit of the Sheriff’s Office on the case. The results of the investigation will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
