Butler County deputy killed in crash

A deputy with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office was killed Monday in a two-vehicle crash north of El Dorado.

44-year-old Stephen Evans also served as a part-time police officer for the city of Burns, and he was working in that capacity when he was killed in the crash.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, which happened around 5 p.m. Monday in the 5200 block of North Highway 77.   A preliminary investigation found that Evans was driving south on the highway in a Burns Police Department vehicle when he attempted a U-turn.   His patrol car was then hit by a southbound pickup.

Evans was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of the pickup was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries.
