The Wichita Police Department and Mel Hambelton Ford Racing have teamed-up to create an event that kicks off this weekend which aims to crack down on illegal street racing.

The “Horsepower on the Plains Heads-Up 1/8 Mile Drag Racing Event” will take place at the Kansas International Speedway on Aug. 27th & 28th. It will provide those who like to race an opportunity to do so off of Wichita streets and in a safe, controlled, and legal environment.

Wichita Police said that 28 traffic fatalities have occurred so far this year, 8 of which were due to speeding, and 2 of which were directly related to illegal street racing. They hope that this event will provide a positive outlet for community members.

Participants will even have a chance to race some members of the Wichita Police Department.

The event runs from 6 p.m. to Midnight on Friday, August 27th and from 5 p.m. to Midnight on Saturday the 28th.
