Wichita students begin a new school year

Students in the Wichita school district returned to classes Wednesday morning, with a number of special activities across the district.

Wichita State University athletes welcomed students back to Hyde Elementary School, and the group Real Men Real Heroes greeted students at Brooks Middle Magnet School.  District leaders put a video on Twitter cheering students to “dream, believe and achieve.”   Members of the Wichita Police Department welcomed students at Harry Street Elementary school.

Students, teachers and staff will be strongly encouraged to wear masks, but the district is not requiring masks as other Kansas districts have done.  The district has outlined a quarantine protocol that was approved by the school board earlier in the week.   More information is available at the district’s web site at usd259.org

Enrollment figures will be available later, but based on numbers from last year, the district will have around 47,000 students.  More than 400 new staff members have joined the district for the new school year.
