Wichita city council members were presented Tuesday with a master plan for the future use of the former L.W. Clapp Golf Course, which was closed in 2019.
A Kansas City consulting firm, Confluence, was hired by the city last year to conduct public meetings and get ideas on the uses for the property at Harry and Oliver. P.J. Novick, representing the firm, said people wanted a cafe, green space, a sledding hill, and they wanted to see space for food trucks. Novick said people favored use of the park for a farmers market, nature walks, picnics and other activities.
Novick presented a four-phase, $28 million plan that would develop park space, a neighborhood playground, a dog park, a bistro with patio, a disc golf course, and a band shell for concerts and performances. Wichita Park and Recreation Director Troy Houtman said the park would also have different elevations to provide for hills and playscapes.
City Manager Robert Layton said the City Council will be considering the plan as they finalize a 2022 budget and a ten-year Capital Improvement Plan.
