The City of Wichita has been using natural gas to keep the Ring of Fire burning at the Keeper of the Plains statue.
Mayor Brandon Whipple talked about a partnership with Kansas Gas Service during his weekly news conference near the statue on Thursday. Whipple said the partnership is providing a more sustainable and affordable source for the flame pots that make up the Ring of Fire.
KGS donated a sign that is posted near the statue, and it has information on the importance of fire to Native American tribes. The Ring of Fire is lit at 9 p.m. every night, and it burns for about 15 minutes. Park and Recreation Director Troy Houtman said public works staff goes out every evening to check the pots and then light the Ring.
