Kansas Senator Roger Marshall joined a bipartisan group in introducing the Hunger-Free Summer For Kids Act. The bill aims to add flexibility to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program, which offers children free lunch and snacks through the summer.

The bill gives states additional options to reach kids in communities that don’t have a centralized site during the summer months.  Current summer meal regulations require children to travel to a central location and eat together, however in rural areas it can be difficult for kids to reach a site–if one even exists.

The Hunger-Free Summer For Kids Act proposes that kids be allowed to consume meals off-site through mobile feeding and backpack meal programs. Additionally, it would authorize the summer EBT program, which would provide eligible families with $30 per summer month per child.
