Evergy started using controlled power outages in Kansas at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Evergy Senior Vice President Chuck Caisley said late Tuesday that around 270,000 customers company-wide were without power during the rolling outages.  Some of the outages lasted three hours or more.  Caisley said that’s because the Southwest Power Pool asked for reductions of more electricity over a longer period of time to stabilize the power grid in a 17-state region.   There were still around 5,000 customers without power late in the day Tuesday, but many of them were related to other issues and not the rolling blackouts.

Caisley said there could be more outages needed into mid-morning Wednesday, and he urged customers to continue following steps to conserve electricity.

Wichita has had scattered outages since Monday, with about 200 outages reported Tuesday morning. These don’t seem to have  been part of the controlled outages. Controlled outages are expected to last about 30-minutues. Evergy says there is no practical way to give advance notice of when and where power will be cut. You’re asked to call Every if your power is out for more than an hour.
