Sedgwick County investigators have arrested two people in connection with a drug smuggling operation at the county jail.
Sheriff Jeff Easter said Friday that a synthetic drug known as K-2 was smuggled into the jail on pieces of paper that were mailed to inmates. The drug was sprayed in liquid form on the paper, and a group of inmates who received the mail had been selling the drug-coated paper to other inmates.
Easter said an inmate was having a reaction to K-2 on December 2nd, leading to a medical response. Seven other inmates also reported adverse reactions and one was taken to a hospital.
The sheriff’s office confiscated over 70 sheets of paper that had been placed in inmate mail. The investigation also led to the Regency Inn at 6125 West Kellogg, and two people were arrested. Deputies also found dynamite inside a room.
Easter said the jail will send inmate mail to a third-party vendor who will scan the mail and send copies to inmates.
