The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Kansas has announced federal grant funding totaling $2.7 million for efforts to combat violent crime.
One of the grants will provide $1 million to the city of Wichita from the Community Based Crime Reduction Program for enforcement focused on crime hotspots in the city.
Wyandotte County will get almost $1 million for crime hotspots, and the Executive Office of the State of Kansas will get $782,324 for improvements to the electronic record system for criminal justice and background checks.
The awards are part of $458 million in Justice Department funding announced Monday by U.S. Attorney General William Barr.
The U.S. Attorney for Kansas, Stephen McAllister, said the funding will support innovative, tested and diverse solutions to the problem of violent crime.
Recent data from the FBI and the Bureau of Justice Statistics show a drop in crime overall for 2019 for the third year in a row, but a number of cities have reported increases in crime.
