Two KDOT snow plow trucks disabled in crashes

The Kansas Department of Transportation says two of its snow plow trucks were hit from behind and disabled in separate crashes in the south central part of the state.

Both crashes happened Sunday as freezing drizzle was creating slick driving conditions in the area.  One crash was reported in Wichita and the other was south of Newton on I-135.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said the driver of a car that hit the KDOT truck near Newton was taken to a hospital with a possible serious injury.  There was no word on whether the driver in the Wichita crash was hurt.   The two KDOT drivers were hot hurt.

KDOT officials say the trucks have to run at lower speeds while plowing snow or putting down brine or salt on icy roads.

Motorists are urged to be alert and slow down when approaching plow trucks, and they should give the trucks extra space.
