Kansas State receives grant to develop Solar Energy improvements

Kansas State University has received a 3-year $2.8 million research grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Technologies Office.

The university will use the grant to find ways to integrate more solar power into the U.S. electrical grid. The funds will also be used to help develop tools to protect the grid from physical threats or cyber attacks.

Kansas State officials say solar cells in these solar energy systems share data back and forth, which makes them vulnerable to cyber attacks. The university will be developing technology to protect the cells, and methods to detect a cyber attack.
