Heavy rain leads to flooding across south central Kansas

A flood warning is in effect for Sedgwick and surrounding counties until 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, and a flash flood warning is in effect for southern Butler County and for Cowley County until 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The Sedgwick school district and the West Elk school districts, USD 282 and 439, have canceled class Tuesday because of flooding.

Several roads and intersections are closed due to high water across the Wichita area after around three inches of rain since Monday. More than an inch of rain has fallen in Wichita since midnight Tuesday.

Even after the rain moves out of the area, excessive runoff will continue to cause flooding in low-lying areas, and along creeks and rivers. The Arkansas River near Mulvane is expected to reach near historic flood stage.

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management has opened the state emergency operations center in Topeka to support county efforts to deal with severe weather and flooding.
